It’s the weekend, thank the Lord!!! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Even though it was a short week, it was a rough one. Before we got to enjoy our second Christmas as a family of three, I spent some time with a friend of mine for our birthday. We grew up and went to school together. As in a lot of relationships, when we get older and start families we don’t have a lot of time to connect with others. Since we share a birthday, I wanted us to take some time together and do something fun.
Growing up with a birthday between Christmas and New Years (yesterday was our big day!) we are use to not having big parties. To be able to get away for a couple of hours and enjoy some girlfriend time around the city was just what I needed.
West Side Market
Our first stop for our birthday was the West Side Market. This was actually my first time at the market. I wasn’t sure what to expect and now I am eager to go back. Preferably when it isn’t so busy. If you love to shop locally, this is a must. It is basically a farmers market on steroids. Everything is indoors so you can go all year ’round.
The market was dedicated and opened in 1912. The art-deco architecture is still prominent throughout the building and is breathtaking. There are currently 104 vendors housed in the market. You can buy anything from fish, poultry, dairy, bread, produce, spices and even prepared foods. Of course, I couldn’t leave without getting some sweets for later! I also snagged up some cinnamon swirl bread to make a french toast bake for Christmas morning.
Right next door the the market is a restaurant called Market Garden. Again, this was a first for me. Actually, the whole day was filled with firsts for me! The ambiance inside was a little cold and dark for me, but the food was AMAZING! They even have there own distillery across the street. If you are someone who loves to try different types of beer, I would definitely recommend this place. The brunch burger I had was so good, I had to force myself not to inhale the whole thing. Medium well burger with bacon and a scrambled egg on top….yes please!!!
This French bakery was recommend to me a while back. They were kind enough to donate some macaroons for a blogger event I put together. Ever since, I have been wanting to go in the shop and I finally did it! Of course my friend had been there before. With it being two days before Christmas, they didn’t have a ton of pastries left but still some good options. This just means I will have to go back again when it isn’t so close to a holiday!
Inside, the shop has a whimsy and romantic feel with picture frames hanging in the front windows and fresh flowers on all the tables. Not only can you have macaroons and pastries, you can get small plates and coffee and tea service. We both got some Instagram worthy pastries and I had a little bubbly while my friend enjoyed a french press.
So while we are one year older, it was nice to have some relaxing girl time and enjoy ourselves. I think next year we should treat ourselves to some spa time! What do you enjoy doing for your birthday? Let me know in the comments!
