Remember those quizzes in Seventeen magazine? There would be different ones about what type of friend you were, what your personality is, etc. I remember the style ones too. There were always quizzes about finding out your style. Are you boho, trendy, street chic? Even as an adult you can find these quizzes when signing up for services like Stitch Fix, Dia&Co and Trunk Club. But what if you don’t have a set style? Don’t worry. It’s ok. Why be one style when you can be them all?
Working as a stylist for Stitch Fix, I often hear women say that they don’t know what their style is like it’s a bad thing. They didn’t “get” those quizzes when they were younger and didn’t have it all figured out by the time they were an adult and had to start buying their own clothes. Well, let me tell you sista, I did those quizzes and for the longest time, I still didn’t think I had style. My style consisted of whatever jeans and t-shirt I could find that fit. Then I started my first office job back in 2011 and things started to change. I was now forced to wear business attire 5 days a week.
Style My Life
Enter JCPenney. They were the closest retailer to me that carried plus size clothing that I could afford. Occasionally, I would get things from Lane Bryant, but just being married and making just over minimum wage before I took the job meant that I was looking at the sale rack. Now don’t get me wrong. I still hit up the sale rack more than the New Arrivals section. Still, back in 2011 a lot of the clothes I was purchasing were cute but at times they were still matronly and not for the young 26-year old trendy girl I wanted to be.
Fast forward to today and the plus size market has exploded! Now that there are so many more brands and designers who cater to us plus gals, I can finally try out those styles mentioned back in those quizzes to see if I really was the preppy girl or the trendsetter. Do you know what I have found? I am not just one style, I am all styles. Trendy, edgy, preppy, classic, flirty, romantic, boho, and just a sprinkle of vintage. And guess what? I love that I am not confined to one style box.
What Is Style?
Being able to play around with every style makes it my own style. I can take an edgy leather jacket and layer it over a frilly floral dress. That preppy tween skirt is going to get paired with a simple striped tee. I love that I can take a piece out of all of the style categories and mix them together. Or, I can completely change my style from one day to the next. It doesn’t matter.
There are no rules when it comes to fashion. And if you think you don’t have style, you are wrong sister. Look at your closet. Go on, I’ll wait. Look at what you already have and just start playing. I mean it. Go play dress up. You don’t have to leave the house. Just start pulling shit out of your closet and pairing it with something you would never in a million years pair with it. Do it and see what happens. Maybe it works and maybe it doesn’t. If it doesn’t work, look at it and think, “what will make it work”?
Figure Out What You Like And What You Don’t Like
Are you still scratching your head and saying ” I don’t know.”? Ok, calm down. It’s just clothes. Pull out your phone and go to Pinterest. Start searching for styles. Start simple. Type in trendy denim looks and see what comes up. Did you find something you like? Ok, then save that photo. Keep looking and start switching things up. Maybe try edgy denim looks and then look at casual denim looks. Do you want to try prints? You can search that too. Just start saving the pictures that you like. More importantly, look at the pictures you like. What is it about that outfit you like? Make a note of that one item from that one picture and try it out. Go put that jeans and t-shirt outfit back on and try tucking the shirt like the girl in the photo. Now, add your work blazer to it and throw on a pair of heels.
My point is this – It doesn’t matter if you like that shirt and that dress and those earrings. Just start throwing clothes together and play around. Put that t-shirt over that dress and give it a little knot on the side. Now you have a completely different look that is yours. Don’t force yourself into one style box that isn’t your thing. Know that is ok. Treat style like a buffet. Take a little of this and then add a little of that. Just start putting stuff on your plate and go enjoy yourself.
