Hey and welcome back! We are heading in to the middle of August and fall is just around the corner. As I am getting ready to pack away the summer tops and breaking out the sweaters and boots, I am also thinking of a different form of storage: my makeup storage. For the longest time, I kept all of my makeup in a drawer in my bathroom. Now that I am getting more in to makeup and playing around with color, it was becoming more and more of a pain trying to root around to find the item I was looking for in the drawer.
I first went to Pinterest to look up storage ideas and fell in love with all of the elegant vanities and storage containers. The acrylic containers are so elegant and clean looking. So I went to my local Container Store to check them out. I didn’t realize exactly how small and expensive the makeup storage containers are! With the amount of make up I have, I would have had close to $100 if not more in makeup storage.
If you have the funds to spend, then I say go for it. I however, do not, so I needed to think outside the box. I ended up going with one of those plastic storage containers that you see a lot in offices. It has three separate drawer compartments and the top is sectioned off into different sizes. You can get a similar one at Staples for $15!! Now, I know what you’re thinking. It’s not all that cute. Well I have decided to fix that by getting some spray paint and painting it. They are so many different options for spray paint now a days. Maybe a metallic gold, or a rose gold color!!!
Now that I have my makeup storage caddie it’s time to go though my supply and ween it out. Here are some guidelines for makeup expiration according to WebMD;
Mascara & liquid eyeliner: Every three to four months because bacteria gets in every time you put the wand back in the tube.
Liquid foundation: Up to a year if stored away from heat.
Lip gloss & lipstick: up to 6 months for gloss, and a year for lipstick
Powders: 18 months to 2 years, unless they have a weird smell or changed color.
Also, there is no point in holding on to something if you never wear it. I know it can be hard to let something go to the trash that can be used. If it is something that you haven’t opened or only tried on your hand, see if a friend can use it. Otherwise, pitch it. I promise, it will feel good to unload!
Now that I only have the items that I know I will use, it’s time to organize. I got a little vase from Wal-Mart that works great for holding my brushes. On the top of the storage container I put all of my primers, creams and sprays and the eye shadow pallet I use the most for easy access. The top drawer holds my other eye shadows, eye liners and mascara. In the middle drawer I have my blushes, highlighters, bronzers, and lip colors. The bottom drawer has brush cleaner, sponges and my brow kit.
The makeup storage container fits nicely on the top of my counter and is big enough to hold everything in neatly organized drawers. Not too shabby for under $20!! I’d love to know how you have your makeup and beauty products stored!
